"How long does a custom engagement ring take?" usually comes with a date attached: a proposal, a trip, an anniversary. This guide walks through what happens between clicking order and opening the box, using BVDIY's own published timings, so you can work backwards from your date.
A BVDIY custom engagement ring is made to order and typically ships in 15–20 days; your estimated ship date appears in the ring studio before you order. Standard delivery adds 5–10 business days within the US and Canada. Plan on roughly three to five weeks from order to delivery, and order early if you have a fixed date.
How long does a custom engagement ring take, start to finish?
Two published numbers set the timeline. Production: every ring is made to order and typically ships in 15–20 days. Delivery: standard shipping takes 5–10 business days, and we ship to the United States and Canada. Added together, most orders arrive in roughly three to five weeks. The exact ship date for your design is shown in the ring studio above the add-to-cart button, so check it before you order rather than relying on the general range.
What happens at each step after I order?
| Step | What happens | Timing | Can you still change it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Design and order | You choose the diamond, head, band, metal, size, and engraving in the ring studio and check out. Choose your grading lab when you order. | Day 0 | Yes, until you check out |
| 2. Change window | Email [email protected] with your order number to modify or cancel. | Within 1 hour of ordering | Yes, within that hour |
| 3. Pre-production check | Diamond availability, specifications, and certification are confirmed before production. | Before production begins | Questions about your diamond? Email [email protected] |
| 4. Production | The ring is made to your design. | Within the 15–20 day make time | No. The design cannot be changed once production has started |
| 5. Photo approval | We photograph the finished ring and send the photos for your approval before shipping. | Before shipping | Reviewing, not redesigning |
| 6. Ships | The ring leaves the workshop. | Typically 15–20 days after ordering; your estimated date is shown in the studio | No |
| 7. Delivery | Standard shipping to the US or Canada. | 5–10 business days | No |
Can I change my ring after I order?
Only briefly. You can modify or cancel an order within 1 hour of placing it by emailing [email protected] with your order number. After that the order moves toward production, and once production has started the design cannot be changed. In practice this means the real decision point is checkout: confirm the shape, carat, grades, head, band, metals, ring size, and engraving spelling before you pay. If you are unsure about size, see how stones compare in our lab-grown diamond carat size chart, and use the ring size guide to measure a ring the wearer already owns.
Do I get to see the ring before it ships?
Yes. Before shipping, we photograph your finished ring and send the photos for your approval. Use them to compare against your order: center stone shape, setting style, metal colors, and engraving. This is a check that the ring matches what you ordered; it is not a stage for redesigning it, because the design is fixed once production starts.
Does the diamond certificate affect the timeline?
Every center diamond ships with its grading report, and you can choose the grading lab when you order, or contact [email protected] to confirm the options for your diamond. Availability, specifications, and certification are confirmed before production begins. Not sure which lab to pick? Our IGI vs GIA guide explains what each report shows.
How far ahead should I order for a proposal?
Count back from the date you need the ring in hand. Add up to 20 days for the ring to ship and up to 10 business days for delivery, which is about two weeks of calendar time, then add a buffer for weekends, holidays, and the photo-approval step. Ordering five to six weeks ahead leaves room for that buffer. If your date is closer than that, check the estimated ship date in the studio before ordering rather than assuming the shortest end of each range.
When is a made-to-order ring not the right choice?
A custom ring is the wrong fit if you need a ring within the next couple of weeks; production alone typically takes 15–20 days. It is also not right if you need delivery outside the United States and Canada, or if you want to try several rings on and return the ones you do not keep: custom rings are final sale unless damaged or defective, and they cannot be exchanged for a different style or size. Resizing is available for a fee, so contact [email protected] for a quote, but it is better to get the size right before ordering.
What should I prepare before I start?
- Ring size. US sizes 3 to 9, including half sizes. Measure an existing ring with the size guide.
- Stone priorities. Decide what matters most: size, sparkle, or budget. Our guide to choosing a lab-grown engagement ring walks through cut, color, and clarity.
- Setting style. Solitaire or halo changes how big the center looks; see solitaire vs halo.
- Engraving. Up to 20 characters, free. Double-check the spelling, because it cannot be changed after production starts.
